The products principles are universal to just about any type of label you want to start such as rock, rap, pop, R&B, country, or even a universal label that caters to the whole industry.
Here’s the reason. The music industry as it is now, if very different from what it used to be 30 years ago. Back then, there was very little segregation on the charts. Pop, R&B and Rap would probably be found together. Now, everything is segmented. But, the process for finding acts and signing them hasn't really changed much in those same years. So, you could take the principles of this product and apply them to just about any label, except maybe for classical. That's a whole different mindset and animal.
Okay, but what about the product itself? Will it teach you what you will need to learn to avoid the pitfalls of starting your own label? In a word, yes.
Here is just a brief overview of what you will find inside...
* Mission Statement
* Executive Summary
* The Management Team

What You Should Know about Starting a Record Label
Aside from the obvious, that this is a real business and it’s a lot of work, there are a few things that I think you need to know if you’re going to have the best chance of pulling this venture off. The rewards can be numerous, to say the least, but the pitfalls can land you in the poor house faster than you can say, "Joe's your uncle." Having said that, I hope you will take the following words to heart.
Let me start with this. The image you portray is going to be just as important, if not more so, than the actual product that you supply. Sure, you want the product (recording quality, contracts, etc.) to be top notch, but the image you portray (are you artist friendly) is going to make or break you. Like it or not, in this business, appearance is 90% of the battle. If you look professional, prospects are going to believe that you ARE professional. Don’t you EVER forget this.
Build relationships. Oh I can’t stress this enough. It is true for every business but especially for this one. I don’t care how smart you are or how much energy you have. You cannot run a record label by yourself. You are going to have to build many relationships along the way, from everything from recording engineers to A&R people. The last thing you want to do is alienate any of these folks. So if you don’t know how to paint a smile on your face and kiss a little backside, learn how…fast.
Finally, focus, focus, focus. I can’t tel you how many businesses have gone belly up because there wasn’t a pinpoint focus. You don’t want your record label to be all over the map. Who are you after? Who is your target market? What’s your USP? It is your unique selling point. What makes you better than the guy next door? If you can’t answer these questions, you are going to be in some serious trouble.
I can’t stress this enough. Starting a record label is probably one of the most challenging things you will EVER do. The competition is fierce, and with the booming of the Internet, it is easier than ever for record labels to reach their target market. This can work to your advantage IF you have a coordinated game plan put in place.

A Few Tips for Starting a Record Label
In the previous post I wrote on the subject of record labels, I tried to impress how starting a record label is serious business. Well, in this article, I'm going to share with you a few tips on getting that record label of yours started. It is my hope that you’ll find these helpful and springboard you to other ideas.
I can't stress the importance of coming up with a killer name for your record label. Just like with everything else in the world, a name can be gold or it can be your downfall. Motown Records was a perfect example of the perfect record label. It not only defined the label but the style of music itself. Whenever you think of Motown, you think of The Supremes, Jackson 5 and so on. That’s what you want people to think of when they think of YOUR label. It's not an easy thing to pull off, but it's something that's important and should be kept in mind. Branding is the name of this game.
Next, you want to find the best talent you can to work with. I'm not talking about the artists that you sign. I'm talking about the means to creating the music. You want to make sure you get a good recording studio, good engineers and so on. The quality of your product is going to be critical if you expect to have any chance of beating out the big boys. That means having some samples for people to hear, even if that means you have to hire bands to come in and make recordings for you. Your clients need to have a very good idea of what they can expect from you.
Finally, and this is the part you’re not going to want to hear, say a lot of prayers... if you have them. The recording industry, to say it's competitive, would be like saying that Megan Fox only has pleasant features. You are gonna be going up against some of the biggest names in the business. If you believe that success is just going to fall into your lap, you are living in a dream world that nobody is going to be able to snap you out of. You have a monumental task ahead of you.
Having said that, if you come up with a killer name, have the best resources and ultimately put together a quality product, you have just as good a chance as anybody else of achieving success.
